We are certainly living in an instant society. Everyone wants things to be able to happen at the snap of a finger. Business is no different. We often want to fly before we even learn to walk well.
As I work with numerous organizations in multiple industries, I often find the over-riding question to be “how fast can we make this happen?” While I understand that time is money, the real issue needs to be “what do we need to do to make it work right?” [Effectively and Efficiently] We often spend more money fixing the half-baked plans that we would have by building the time into the project for excellence.
I was reminded of this fact today as a client is closing in on an important project crossroad. They keep putting off some big decisions that need to be made. The proverbial runway is ever-shortening for the project to take-off and be successful. It seems so many organizations operate under a hurry-up-and-wait mentality until things move to a panic mode. Then and only then do they get moving. The problem is that often the runway is so short they cannot not take-off and fly. The project stalls on take-off due to a lack of speed and stability. Then the easiest target to blame is the consultant.
As you are planning and implementing your projects, make sure you provide your project the best opportunity for success by building a long enough runway for take-off. Just like an airplane requires speed and stability for flight, so projects require a certain amount of preparation and thorough implementation to find success.
So, is your project runway long enough to fly?
